Week 7 Story: “The Ring”

 The Ring

There once was a family who lived on a farm. This family possessed an antique ring that had been passed down from generation to generation within the family. Unbeknownst to the family, the antique ring was magic. Whoever was in possession of the ring was guaranteed financial security and would never be in poverty. Only the family pets knew that the ring was magic. Unfortunately since the family did not know this ring was magic, they sold it to a man who lived across the road.

This family had two pets, a dachshund named Randy and a cat named Billy. Randy and Billy both cared dearly for their family and did everything they could to ensure their well-being and happiness. As each day passed on, they watched as their family began to struggle to make it financially. This saddened both Randy and Billy. Finally, Randy could not take it anymore and began to figure out how to get the ring back. He told Randy that he needed to catch a mouse, so the mouse could sneak across the road, enter the man’s house who purchased the ring, then return the ring to them. Billy liked that idea, so he went off and caught a mouse.

The next night, Randy and Billy met up. Billy had caught a mouse who had agreed to go get the ring as long as the dog and cat left him alone for the rest of his life. As soon as the man across the street had gone to bed, the mouse ran across the street and snuck into his house through a window. He searched through the house and finally came across a jewelry box. The mouse saw the ring glowing inside the box, so he chewed a hole through the box and grabbed the ring. He then raced back across the street to give Randy and Billy the ring.

After the mouse had given them the ring, Randy and Billy went inside to present the ring to their owners. Once they saw the ring, they were very excited. They praised Randy and Billy. They vowed to always honor dachshunds and cats until the end of time.

Author’s note: This story was based off the Chinese Fairy Tale: “Why Dogs and Cats are Enemies”. The story is about a family that sells a magic ring, then begins to fall in debt. The dog and cat decide to get the ring back, but the cat tricks the dog and takes all the credit for getting the ring. After this, dog and cat hate each other. I changed the ending to both the dog and cat getting credit for getting the ring.

  1. Hey Levi!

I think this story is well-written and easy to follow! I think it would've been cool if you'd included some dialogue, perhaps between the animals, to make it a little more engaging, but I definitely think you did a great job overall. I like how you changed the ending to make it happier, too! My only question would be: why did the family sell the ring if they were already financially stable?

  2. Hello!

I like your retelling of the story. It's silly and all the while engaging. I wanted to know what would happen next. This is just a suggestion, but your story would be more improved if you included dialogue. It would help the reader to understand what the characters want to do as well as have a stronger connect. The characters would feel more than words on a page. I hope this helps, and I can't wait to see what else you write.
