Introduction To A Future Football Coach

Hello, my name is Levi Ware and I am a senior health and exercise science major at OU. I am from a very small town in the Texas Panhandle, Wheeler, Texas. The population of Wheeler is about 1,500 people, so when I first moved off for college, it was a culture shock to me. I really enjoy living in Norman though, it’s a nice change of scenery with all of the trees and water. I plan on pursuing a career in coaching football after I graduate, so I enjoy my major since it allows me to learn the science behind sports and sport training. The best class I took last semester was Principles of Personal Training. I really enjoyed this class because I learned weight lifting techniques and programs that I will be able to use with my football team in the future. I really like comedy movies, and I’d have to say that Will Ferrell’s movies are my favorite. I really like to laugh and be goofy, so I really enjoy his movies. I also like playing and listening to music. I play the piano and my brother plays the guitar. We’ve been lucky enough to have been able to open up for some popular Texas-country artists such as Whiskey Myers, Kyle Park, and Bart Crow. I have two dogs, a Golden Doodle named Bailey and a dachshund named Henry. Bailey is just a puppy, and Henry is an old man. When they play together it cracks me up because Bailey is about 50 pounds heavier than Henry, but she’s the biggest chicken on planet earth.  I also really enjoy cooking and grilling different types of food when I get a chance to. My favorite food to grill is steak. I could probably eat my body weight in steak! I’m looking forward to this semester and can’t wait to get my senior year rolling.

  1. Hi Levi! I am also from a small town, and had a hard adjustment as well. But now, just like you, I love Norman! I love Texas Country, and think that is really awesome that you and your brother got to open up for some popular country bands. That is great that you two have something so fun to do together.

  2. Hi Levi!
Your story about your dogs made me smile. We had a similar situation with our two dogs, Bernard, a 20-lb Chihuahua mix, and Buddy, our old man. He was about 100 pounds of lab and goodness knows what else! Bernard is younger and is still the boss of the house. He has everyone very well trained! I'm glad to see other people have small dogs who boss the bigger dogs around.

  3. That whole field of personal training and coaching is something I'm really interested in, Levi! Personally I think teachers could benefit from seeing themselves more as coaches than testers-and-judges; I definitely see myself more as a coach. Not a sports coach, but a story coach! And music is the same way too: with sports and with music both, everybody understands that practice is a huge thing; that's how you learn. But school doesn't leave a lot of room for practice. So, I hope this class can be a fun way for you to practice writing, practice storytelling... and maybe learn some inspirational stories that will help you in your coaching work too. Plus your Henry and Bailey might even make an appearance in some of your story posts here at the blog: I am a total believer in pet energy as a way to bring life to a story, especially when pets are so full of very individual personality as it sounds like your two dogs are! :-)

It is os awesome that you are enjoying classes such as Principles of Personal Training and I am sure that classes like that will be so practical for implementation in the future. Your dogs sound so cute I love goldens and golden doodles and one of my close friends has a dachshund and they are such sweet animals. It is awesome that you get to perform with your brother much less open for such awesome artists.

  5. Hi Levi! Your major sounds very cool, and I think you are suit for be a football coach. Besides, when you said that your major allows you to learn the science behind sports and sport training, I feel same with you when I study economics. I am really excited when I study the regularity of the economical system.

  6. Hi Levi! It was a pleasure to go through your intro. I never heard about health and exercise science as a major. I had no idea it existed, it sounds cool after your explanation . Additionally, it is so cool that you want to be a football coach. I imagine that you don't miss any games on TV because it looks like you are very passionate about it. Also, Nice to hear that you have dogs. I also want a dog in the future, and i will probably consider getting a golden doodle because they look so cute on the picture that you posted. Enjoy the rest of your semester!

  7. Hi Levi!
I think it's really cool that you want to be a coach!
I plan to likely go into some sort of education field, so I totally understand wanting to go down a path like that!
Best of luck on your journey!
Also, the interactions between your two dogs sound totally adorable and pretty funny to watch!

  8. Hi Levi! It's awesome that you want to be a football coach! I am also a Health and Exercise Science major at OU so I know a little bit about that stuff. I also love your taste in music, I am a fan of those artists as well. I heard most of them from friends in my own hometown of Elgin, OK (kind of a small, middle of nowhere town!). Also, your dog is absolutely adorable. I loved the picture you included! Anyways it was nice to meet you!

  9. Hi Levi! I'm also a senior this year! Exciting and terrifying at the same time for sure!! I also love comedy movies! I actually love movies in general! I'm one of those weirdos who loves going to the movies so much that I definitely go alone sometimes! (ha, oops!) But I do love Will Ferrell movies! I grew up with a brother and all boy cousins so I love all the bro humor movies for sure! I'm excited to get to read your stories this semester, and I wish you the best of luck with your future in coaching!

  10. I think it is really cool that you want to be a football coach in the future. I played football in high school and loved it! Being a football coach is a great job and I know you will have a very positive influence on your team. It is such a cool job to have because all the young high school kids look up to you so much and also winning is really fun! You are the first person I know of that wants to be a football coach and I think that is so cool. Hopefully, you will make it to the NFL one day!

  11. Hey Levi, loved reading about you! I used to be an HES major untilI changed it last year. I never got into the specific major classes because of my uncertainty of continuing. So I didn't even know there was Principles of Personal Training class! That is so cool and it sound like it will definitely work in your favor. Are you looking to coach High School football, and if so would you ever think about coaching at the college level? My family is a big football family. My brother actually played for our home team Virginia Tech! Your dogs sound great. I really connected with what you said about your larger dog being a chicken my larger one is the same he submits to our small terrier all the time (lol). I think it's probably got something to do with "little dog syndrome" as I like to call it. Hope your semester is going well and maybe I'll ge to read something of yours in the future!

  12. Hi again Levi!
After reading your story, "Why the Moon is Black and White", I can picture you being a football coach so perfectly! I'm also an HES major, I'm a fifth year senior, but there's a large chance we've had a class together. HES is so cool to me because you can do so many diverse things with and I've enjoyed my time in the program. I'm personally not much of a griller, but I like to think I'm a pretty good cook!

  13. Hi Levi!

I totally agree about the culture shock of a big town. My town is only 8,000-10,000 people (I think?) so coming to Norman feels like two completely different worlds. I also love to cook! While I am definitely not a griller like you, I agree that I could also eat my body weight in steak if I committed myself to it. In fact, I do make some pretty great mashed potatoes. If we collaborated and made a full steak and potato dinner, I think we'd make a bomb dish!

  14. Hello!
Wow! That is a really small town. And I thought my town of less than 8,000 was small. Haha. I think that impressive you and your brother are both musically talented. Bailey is super cute! And that's funny, bigger dogs tend to be the biggest babies, while smaller dogs think they're the boss. Good luck with the football coach career!

  15. Hey Levi!! I went to a small high school, but I'm from OKC so I don't quite get that small town feel. I also played piano growing up, but it is so cool that you are your brother are able to play together! Additionally, your dogs are adorable and I hope your coaching career works out!

  16. Hey Levi!

I think it's super cool that you plan on becoming a football coach and great that OU offers such a useful major for that profession. That personal training class sounds really interesting. I totally relate with loving to cook and grill stuff, and I think Bailey is super cute (I'm sure Henry is, too)!! Good luck with everything!

  17. Hi Levi!

first off, your dogs are so cute! i have two small dogs at home and i miss them so much, but i only live 45 mins away so i can go see them every so often. Also, thats really cool you want to be a football coach. I grew up on college football and even played powderpuff in high school so i love it. not loving this football season too much though, ive definitely seen better. at least texas beat OSU so we have a chance at big 12 championship, but even the conference looks not so hot. have a great semester!

  18. Hey Levi! I love that you want to be a football coach in the future. I'm currently going through training to be a personal trainer and it truly is so interesting to learn about how our body works and moves; definitely something that will be useful for coaching! Also I am so jealous that you are musically talented. That's something I've always wanted to master but have never been able to. Hope you have a great semester!

  19. Hi Levi! Congrats on almost being done with college! How does it feel to almost have to get out into the real world? Do you think you would want to stick around in Oklahoma then? It's definitely a bit different from growing up in such a small town! Oh wow getting to open for artists is really amazing, I hope you get to continue doing music even after you graduate!

  20. Hi Levi :)
Bailey and Henry sound so cute! One of my dogs' names is Henry, too, but he's just out of puppy stage. I think that's really cool you like sports and the science behind it so much! I know future football teams are definitely going to be lucky to have you! It's also really amazing you've gotten to open for some musicians. I bet you and your brother sound awesome together. Good luck on the rest of your semester and senior year!

  21. Hi, Levi! Great to know that you've found your place and enjoy being in Norman. I'm also from Texas, but I'm from Dallas. So, moving to Norman was actually a culture shock in the other direction. I felt like it was still so small even with the campus life. It's cool to see that you know exactly what you want to do after college. I hope it works out for you!

  22. Hey Levi,

I am so glad to hear that you are enjoying your time in Norman, I think it is my favorite place I have lived so far. I think it is so awesome that you are passionate about coaching. As a future teacher, I may end up coaching a sport myself, which I find kind of terrifying. Thank you so much for sharing details/ pictures of your pets! I am an avid animal lover and I always get so excited to see other people's babies! I can't wait to read more of your stuff! :)

  23. Hey, Levi

I love your dog! I am sure many people already said that but it needed to be said again, no questions. I am glad you are enjoying Norman and Oklahoma. I never hear good things about Oklahoma if I'm being honest, ha-ha. You seem very interested and passionate about what you are studying and how you are studying it. It is clear that you chose the career path made for you, as you seem very clearly excited about it. I just know things will be going your way with the great attitude you have for your major and career. Nice to meet you :)

  24. Hi Levi,

I totally understand the culture shock that you must've felt when you moved from Wheeler to Norman. My roommate had told me about his own similar experiences when he came here from a small town a couple of years ago! However, I hope that you have enjoyed your time and have gotten used to the atmosphere here! Never before have I met someone that had clear dreams of becoming a football coach, so I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors. It definitely sounds exciting! I look forward to reading more from you!

  25. Hi levi,

I find it super interesting that you had a culture shock coming to norman! most people i know from texas think norman is super tiny. given, most people i know are coming from dallas and houston. i'm from edmond, oklahoma, so it was a pretty smooth transition for me. it sounds like you're thoroughbred texan to the bone- country music, football, and steak! i'm a thoroughbred okie personally, down to my native american heritage and career path in oil and gas. i do plan on moving to texas to hopefully get my law degree from UT- sacreligious, i know! have a good rest of your semester!

  26. Levi, it was nice to read about how passionate you are about sports science and coaching football! Football is one of my favorite pastimes to watch and play and I wish you the best with this dream! Also your dog is so freaking cute!!
